Hikokurou
彦九郎 新大橋
Near Shin-Ohashi, traditional confectionery shop Hikokurou wins praise for its meltingly soft warabimochi and fluffy tiger-patterned torayaki filled with whole-bean azuki paste. Here is an introduction to its favored takeaway sweets and seasonal offerings.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
When stopping by Hikokurou near the foot of the Shin-Ohashi bridge, the signature warabimochi is an easy first choice. Cut into generous pieces and packed into boxes, this bracken-starch confectionery is remarkably tender, offering a delicate chew before melting away into a light, succulent texture. It is coated liberally in kinako toasted soybean flour with restrained sweetness, allowing the rustic, nutty fragrance to come through cleanly. Little wonder so many patrons pick up an entire box as a gift or a treat for themselves.
Another mainstay is the torayaki, a variety of dorayaki pancake distinguished by its tiger-striped surface. Sandwiched between thick, pillowy sponge layers is a generous spread of tsubuan sweet bean paste, where the texture of the azuki beans remains distinct under an elegant, balanced sweetness. The pairing of tender pancake and measured bean filling is wonderfully balanced, and customers frequently purchase it alongside the warabimochi.
The display cases also feature seasonal selections, from cinnamon-scented "Washigazaisho" with sweet potato paste to springtime sakuramochi, domyoji, and early-summer minazuki. With the preparation area set close to the counter, the shop has an intimate atmosphere; staff have even been known to offer tea or a small bite while wrapping orders. Popular sweets can sell out as the day progresses, making an earlier visit the safest bet when looking for specific items.
